When choosing a film to view sometimes there are deeper reasons than the fact that it simply “looks cool” or “the trailer was good”. Sometimes it might be simply because of the cast or some member of the behind the scenes staff that catches your eye. When I heard that Limp Bizkit front man Fred Durst was making his directorial debut on a little film called The Education of Charlie Banks, I personally couldn’t wait to see whether or not he really did “do it all for the nookie,” or if this film would leave me with a little less “faith” than I previously had.

Powder Blue is a straight to DVD release. As movie fans we must be vigilant not to be duped by the quality of the cast. Many B list actors and actresses crave both the spotlight and a paycheck so much they will star in just about anything. Powder Blue’s main attraction is Jessica Biel. Before you horndogs elevate your hopes, one cannot tell at all which character she plays. This movie is deliberately confusing in a failed attempt to mask its flaws.

The film takes place on the set of an independent movie titled Home for Purim. No one expects the movie to do particularly well until its main actress, Marilyn Hack (Catherine O’Hara) hears about an Oscar buzz around her performance. One by one, other actors are rumored for nominations, and as the budget for the film goes up, so do the actors’ egos. It starts off promising- campy acting and entertaining actors, but neither lasts…

Outsourced
After his department is outsourced to India, an American novelty salesman (Todd Hamilton) must travel halfway around the world to teach the person who is set to take his job. Once he’s there, he realizes there’s a lot he needs to learn as well. It’s a corny, fish-out-of-water movie, but I have to admit, it’s a feel-good movie that actually makes you feel good. The love story feels forced and unnecessary, but it’s not overly romantic, and the actors play their parts with such honesty that it’s hard not to believe them. You can love it or hate it, but you’ll probably end up hating the fact that you love it.
