On June 3rd Hollywood and the world lost a legend. David Carradine, best known for his starring roles in the 1970's TV series, "Kung Fu" and his turn as Bill in Tarrantinos Kill Bill series was found dead in his Bangkok hotel room while on location filming for his latest film. Although it seems the circumstances surrounding his death are somewhat shrouded in a bit of mystery, the merits of his career and character are not. One only has to read the touching tribute written by Kill Bill co star Michael Madsen (http://www.michaelmadsen.com) To realize just the kind of man David Carradine was.
Star of over 100 feature films, and dozens upon dozens of television series, David’s career was not one to be taken lightly. Son of actor extraordinare John Carradine, David began his career in the arts as a sculptor/painter who dabbled in some on and off Broadway productions. His big break came when he starred as the title character in 1966's Shane and he went on to become a Golden Globe nominee in 1976 for his turn as Woody Guthrie in Bound For Glory. Married 5 times and divorced 4, Mr. Carradine seemingly lived quite the colorful life despite being quite shy and introverted according to those who knew him well. Not many who worked with him or near him had any an ill begotten word to say of the man and director Quentin Tarrantino is quoted as labeling him one of Hollywoods "great mad geniuses".
Although David claimed that he had "always had an especially hard time with everything he tried to do", I am certain that the world is going to have a much harder time accepting the fact that he is now gone. The news of his passing had a shocking effect on Hollywood and the world and there are many things that just wont be the same now that he is no longer with us.
