I have only seem one truly scary Zombie movie, which was the original Resident Evil, mainly based off the loose premise of the book Lab 257. With that being said, this movie was well worth seeing. The opening sequence with Metallica 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and the Illustrated Rules on how to survive in Zombieland are displayed, let you know you are in for a treat. Much like pulling a urine flavored dumb dumb lollipop out of the 500 count bag. What are the odds?
Granted, I find something bothersome about Jesse Eisenberg playing himself as the unsure, insecure, neurotic teen. I didn't even ask myself why he survived, I just found it amusing watching him get chased. When Woody Harrelson shows up, I thought I would order a Gin and Tonic ("Cheers" flashback), but once he cut the zombie's head off with the garden sheers, (you had me at hello Woody, you had me at hello). Also, I do not know why they cut that part out of the film, we only got to see the before and after. The most special part of this film was the introduction of Bill Murray, who unfortunately only had a cameo. This got me thinking about a future film gem, casting Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Jon Lovitz and Eugene Levy as 4 friends on vacation at a resort who smoke government reefer and turn into Zombies! Come on hollywood get to work on this script, or I will do it for you. Now back to the film.
The rag tag group decends on Hollywood and make their way to the biggest house on the block. Who's house you ask? Why Bill Murray's. The group splits up and investigates. Woody Harrelson runs into a Zombie Bill Murray, who strangely enough is not a Zombie, just wearing make up so he could "blend in" and play golf!!! Truly classic. The rest of the scene is so great I cannot write any more about it. All I have to say is that this alone is reason enough to see the movie. On a Sunday afternoon, I would highly recommend this and Broken Lizard's Club Dread as a doubleheader.
