Looks like I have undertaken weekend duty here as SS.com. What happened to all of my writers? This of course is serendipity. I had laryngitis all weekend and decided to watch three motion pictures. They are still moving in my mind as I cannot decide what to make of them…
Mami Mia is a miraculously brilliant adaptation of the Broadway musical. It offers the perfect mixture of regular dialogue and beautiful song verses. Delving into the plot would inevitably destroy your enjoyment. It would be better to watch the adaptation without possessing any prior knowledge of the show itself. Sufficed to say the combination of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, along with one of the most well-casted, TALENTED casts in the history of filmmaking brings moviegoers a rare treat at a discounted rate. The singing, the dancing, the humour, and the talent coalesce flawlessly. Everyone looks young, vivacious and thrilled to be a part of this production. There is not a hint of error, and nearly every line is a comedic zinger! Watch this anytime and be happy to have a little old-fashioned culture in your life.
Step Brothers is a timeless classic, or so my mother remarked! I might have sat there totally in awe of their audacity to push the limits of decency and normalcy, but since my mother laughed for 2 hours non-stop I joined in on the fun, laryngitis notwithstanding. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have outdone themselves. This film is sicker than the Brothers Solomon, dumber than Dumb and Dumber, although less amusing than any comedy movie I have watched this year.
It truly depends on one’s tolerance for Will Ferell’s ninetieth attempt at a childish comedy playing on our senses of immaturity and adolescent senses of humor. His schtick is arguably growing tiresome, but if a woman turning 56 on Friday (my mother) can enjoy this frivolous movie and call it a slice of real life, well dammit, I give it two thumbs up…side down!!! Just kidding, watch it and bring a date.
