As a woman, I have never been a comic fan compared to some die hard male fans. Even though I dislike reading brick and mortar comic books, I love seeing good comic come to life on the movie screen. When Watchmen finally hit the silver screen after about 20 years I was intrigued to watch it.
The setting occurs during a parallel universe circa1985 in which America is at war with Russia. Crime is rampant everywhere and people’s lives are chaotic. The only lawmen are superheroes trying to preserve order. The movie started with the Comedian dying which led to a series of events with Rorschach trying to collect the whole team together. He predicts there is a person sabotaging and killing all of the costumed heroes. Meanwhile, for background, each character’s past is revealed to each theatergoer.
An approximate run time of 2 hours and 47 minutes is too long. The storyline drags as the director has a hard time trying to connect all the tiny plots together into one coherent framework. Do not despair, there is an upside! The CGI details tremendous effects accompanied by a soundtrack that will remind you of the superhero glory days, the 1980s.
Ultimately there is no middle ground; watching this movie will not make you say that it is fantastic or a miserable waste of one’s precious time.
A warning for people who would go to this movie with a date: Please, don't drag your girlfriends kicking and screaming. The affair is way too long for her to sit there and do nothing but sigh and roll her eyes. At the same time, as a heterosexual man you might be a little bit uncomfortable if you would see Dr. Manhattan's flaccid blue penis swinging around in the big screen. (Had to throw that in there people!) Enjoy the show one way or another.
