While famous English poet, historian, epic iambic pentametrist William Shakespeare is rolling in his unmarked, unfound grave over the butchery of Hollywood remakes of his plays, another English literarian and overall genius is celebrating in heaven. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud of the movie Sherlock Holmes, and frankly so am I.
I have only two complaints about the entire two hour movie. First, Rachel McAdams should have practiced before acting. It took her five minutes to warm up during which she looked out of place and off character. Second, this film would be better on DVD. I would give it a ten instead of a nine were it not a theater release. It is a little too long for the big screen. It never drags, but it would be best watched in three installments in order to enjoy it fully and without being forced to absorb so much goodness all at once.
The storyline nicely mimics Doyle’s work. I am sure everyone with an ounce of literary knowledge is wondering if the sequels will come in to play. "Hound of Baskervilles" anyone? Albeit I have resolved myself to provide storyline plot points and enhancements in all articles, if you want to know what happens go read the book or watch the movie!
Robert Downey Jr. is masterful as Holmes. He plays the eccentric genius entangled in an emotional drama of epic proportions. Jude Law is the perfect Watson, at once distant from and disapproving of Holmes, and still thoroughly captivated by his antics and sense of the occult. Holmes is a fighter, an inventor, and is insanely curious about how things work. He enjoys solving mysteries, the more ostensibly supernatural the better. What better way to prove a theory than by disproving another? Rachel McAdams as I mentioned earlier got off to a rough start, but quickly thereafter meshed well with the cast. Albeit not the prettiest dame in Hollywood she is one of the better actresses and it shows here. Playing Holmes’ kryptonite (former lover and cunning criminal) is something she does excessively well. Near the end we are introduced to the villain behind the scenes, the infamous Professor Moriarti. Man am I curious about the potential for a sequel.
Sherlock Holmes the movie is full of nostalgic English scenery, alchemy, explosions, laughter, excitement and near death experiences that will dazzle your mind and intrigue your heart.
