Every once in a grand while you come across a film that randomly strikes your fancy. It may be one that you had never heard of before or something that you may have come across on a list of new releases. Whatever the case may be, you find yourself involved in the storyline.
Camille is a cute little charmer starring James Franco and Sienna Miller as the oddest of newlywed couples. Camille (Miller) has been in love with ne’er do well Silas (Franco) since she was 6 years old. Currently out of jail on parole, Silas is forced to marry Camille (who he feels less than favorable about) under threat of a return to jail. The "happy" couple head off towards Niagara Falls for their honeymoon and all seems well. A motorcycle accident, however, takes Camille’s life. Although she is dead, oddly enough she walks and talks among the living as her body slowly decays. The odd couple continues their journey and along the way meet up with the mysterious Cowboy Bob (David Carradine) who assists them with transportation, among other things. Plagued with a sense of guilt over the current condition of his bride, Silas makes it his personal mission to get her to Niagara Falls for her dream honeymoon and as he tends to her "special" needs, he starts to fall in love.
This certainly is a bit of a quirky film, but it definitely has its charm. Something about the way Sienna plays her character annoys you and enthralls you all at once. You want to feel badly for Camille, but the fact that she is so perky and cheery to the point of sheer madness and has a knack for positively spinning ANY situation (even her own death) makes it near impossible to feel anything but joy. Franco does just ok in my opinion. He had shining moments but it seemed they were fleeting. Every once in a great while when I see him in a scene I cannot help but picture a young James Dean. Of course I refer to the look, and not the quality of acting (no offense Mr. Franco).
I thought it was an ok film, albeit bizarre. In an interview with the BBC I heard rumors that James Franco was quoted as saying he was "shocked it was coming out" and that it was "not good". The man should know better than to tear down his own film. He did, after all, choose to be a part of it. There is something to be said for Camille, and those who enjoy something off the beaten path will surely get a little kick out of it. If you enjoy quirky, fun, nonsense in a film, then check this out.
