Resident Evil: Retribution (review) is a situational movie. It is nothing more than one impossible to pass level in a video game. The CGI are incredibly fake and ridiculous but I will be damned if it is not thrilling and entertaining all the same. Nearly all of Alice's friends have returned (with the exception of her former lover-turned monster, and Claire Redfield played by Ali Larter). After wreaking havoc onboard the rescue ship-turned doomsday machine, all of Umbrella's forces converge on Alice's location. The fate of all of her friends remains uncertain but the majority of them are utilized against her in some fashion. Only Luther escapes and remains her ally.
The remaining humans continue resisting Umbrella and the Red Queen's effort to eradicate all of mankind. Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) has defected from Umbrella after discovering the Red Queen's plan to stop trying to salvage mankind and to destroy its very existence instead. Albert has Alice released from the Umbrella torture/interrogation room by employing his deadly assassin Ada Wong (Li Bingbing). The facility our heroine is brought to is referred to as Umbrella Prime and it is located near the frozen tundra of Russia. The Prime facility is where humans were replicated in factories to provide realistic scenarios for Umbrella's weapons brokers to entice government leaders to purchase their biological weapons. Alice is among the clones engendered to showcase how an outbreak would look in Tokyo, Moscow, Hong Kong, New York, etc. What would Resident Evil Retribution be without an international flavor.
In order to escape and try to return to what remains of the world, Alice must navigate her way through several of the live scenarios with RPGs, machine gunning, and mutated monsters. Helping her is an elite team, including her friend Luther (Boris Kodjoe), and fighting against her are clones of her friend Carlos (Oded Fehr).
Enough with the plot summary ladies and germs, here comes the spoiler. Sound the alarms readers if you have not already watched the movie. Resident Evil: Retribution is a prequel to what seems to be a two part grand ending to the franchise once and for all, barring any lame spin-off attempts. When Alice escapes with a new daughter, and a couple of assassins-in-tow, she is brought to Albert Wesker's redoubt. Unfortunately, Albert is truly no longer a threat to her. The Umbrella grown mutants and the undead are. The last group of humans are for all intents and purposes barricaded in to a small fortress and they are losing their battle for survival. This is why Albert helped Alice; to turn her back into Project Alice, for no other creature can destroy the evil lurking at humanity's front door. Yup, a sequel, or two, are imminent. Resident Evil 5 is nothing more than a prequel, go figure. Feel ripped off yet? Perhaps the gentlemen will change their minds after witnessing Milla Jovovich wrapped up in four plain white paper towels tied together by the thinnest of transparent strings!
