The most salient "new" scenes include: Gimli (son of Gloin) being lampooned by Legolas (of the Woodland realm), Merry and Pippin finding Saruman's kitchen packed to the hilt, Gandalf's intimation of the menacing power of his dark magic, Boromir's brilliant war prosecution (my personal favorite is witnessing the glory of Gondor restored if only before the hammer stroke) Faramir's advice to Frodo and Sam, Saruman's dastardly attempt at revenge, the Nazgul Lord's paramount power, and so much more. Jackson's team of film technicians has meticulously spread out the footage to allow the older scenes surrounding it to appear to be either new or at least revitalized.
Perhaps the best reason for purchasing The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-ray and DVD is the brilliance and lucidity of the high definition enhancements. The leaves, the hairs, the axes, the swords, the grass, the skin; every itsy bitsy minute detail has been glossed and burnished in such a way as to dazzle the eye and fascinate the mind. The depth of clarity and resolution cannot be overstated. Frankly, The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-ray and DVD gives high definition a new meaning. Movie collectors must ask themselves if $55 is too high a price to pay to own one of their all time favorite trilogies that has now been relatively contemporized and rendered a work of art. This Blu-ray and DVD set will line the walls of my home for years to come and someday I will once more revisit The Lord of the Rings in all of its splendor and glory. The king is dead; long live the king!
