It is no secret that The Intouchables (DVD) is a major contender for the Best Foreign Film award within the Academy. The movie is like the play "Waiting For Godot" only with a purpose and less meandering. Based on a true story, and starring Francois Cluzet (Philippe) and Omar Sy (Driss), The Intouchables on DVD is a heartwarming and soul-touching picture about two men handicapped in different ways. Philippe is paralyzed from the neck down to the toes and Driss has no direction in life save epic disappointment no matter which direction his internal compass is pointed toward. Together, these two dispirited souls forge a friendship that endured the good, the bad and a whole lot of life's wearisome realities.
In Flight (movie) Denzel Washington delivers one of the defining performances of his distinguished career. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Flight (movie) should be on every judge's short list for awards consideration. Denzel Washington portrays Captain Whitaker who is affectionately referred to as Captain Whip. The Captain has suffered from alcohol addiction and dependency his entire life. Liquor is what caused Whip's marriage to collapse and with it his relationship with his son. Estrangement aside for a moment, Captain Whitaker pilots a flight that suffered a mechanical disaster causing a total of six crew members and passengers to die a horrific death and adding kerosene to the fire, the co-pilot's life is irrevocably altered.
Headlined by Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook is a charming movie for the holidays. Writer/Director David O. Russell explores the many facets and irregularities manifested by sufferers of bipolar disorder. Two troubled (Cooper and Lawrence) young people suffer from psychological distress; one on account of her husband's death and the other because of his wife's affair with a colleague. Cooper throws himself at this role and all Lawrence has to do is be wickedly charming and beautiful and Silver Linings Playbook was almost guaranteed to be an instant success.
Oscilloscope Laboratories is famous for making mountains out of molehills. Founded by former Beastie Boys band member Adam Yauch and film executive David Fenkel, this is one studio that is unashamed of flooding the market with real films... gritty films. Writer/Director Andrea Arnold retells the timeless story of Heathcliffe and Catherine (originally propounded by classic author Emile Bronte). Wuthering Heights (movie) is the story of Heathcliffe's affluent background and indomitable cruelty is turned on its head by Arnold. Instead of maintaining the premise of the original novel, Arnold transmogrifies Heathcliffe into an illiterate black wanderer that is taken in by a charitable Christian family.
A Royal Affair (a.k.a. En kongelig affære ) is a singularly remarkable film from Magnolia Pictures. Starring the Danish sensation Mads Mikkelson as Dr. Johann Friedrich Struensee, A Royal Affair (movie review) is a sensational movie about the Age of Enlightenment. Based on a transformative historical epoch and a delicious royal shakeup, this movie explores a lesser known aspect of the Enlightenment. Dr. Struensee had been a mere revolutionary doctrinist with no outlet for his progressive ideas. On account of a virtual tantrum from the young Danish King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), a new physician is requested for the royal family. Fearing for her safety and resenting the wanderlust and eccentricity of her husband, Queen Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander) consents and hopes that some sort of change will be forthcoming. What arrives is a blessing and a curse in disguise.
