Without going to great lengths to reengineer the storyline, let's analyze Edge as an actor and WWE Films as a Hollywood player. First, WWE Films has a track record for losing money and for casting injured or aging wrestlers as movie stars. While this is wonderful for the wrestlers, it is often begrudging to casual moviegoers that want to see entertaining DVDs and not self-promotional fluff. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin is not a good actor and he never will be a good actor. John Cena is the Hulk Hogan of this generation but exclusively in the squared circle. Kane (Glen Jacobs) belongs in horror films, but the one (See No Evil) that WWE cast him in sank worse than the RMS Titanic.
The problem with WWE Films is that it chooses leftover scripts and finds out of work C list actors to co-star alongside their wrestling talent. The films have the feel of promoting their talent rather than broadening their film credentials as a corporation. While they are improving with each film, WWE Films has not come along quite enough to convince the non-WWE Universe that their movies are worth even $.99.
Adam "Edge" Copeland is perfect for the role of a self-assured rebellious detective. After all, he is known in certain circles as the Rated R Superstar! Jamie Kennedy is a fine comedic actor, but leaving the stand-up comic duties to Edge proves to be a bad decision. Kennedy comes across as a whiny weasel ten years too late while Edge offers very little in the way of real action. One would think a wrestler, injured or not (spinal stenosis) would offer something in the way of a stunt or a fight scene. Instead, Bending the Rules is all dialogue and no action. There is a reason why audiences tune out WWE during promos, and that's because they tune into a wrestling show to watch WRESTLING. By the same token movie renters want to watch action and not cheesy dialogue. Unfortunately Bending the Rules is heavy on one and light on the other. Only one vertical suplex up folks.
