Brave on DVD is a parable about learning to respect and understand one another. When a very courageous and adventurous princess (Scottish actress Kelly McDonald portrays Merida) is compelled by her mother (Emma Thompson as Elinor) to select a suitor for her betrothal, the young lady rebels in every way possible. Desperate to avoid marrying a buffoon strictly on account of courtly tradition, Merida rides away on her lightning fast horse. A will-o'-the-wisp leads her to an old witch's alchemy lab where fate is about to make an unforeseeable twist.

The elderly cackling witch offers the princess a magic potion that will transform her mother. Merida wants the Queen to understand her needs and desires instead of bullishly adhering to an archaic tradition. Without questioning what sort of a metamorphosis would occur, on blind faith, the princess feeds the Queen the elixir in the form of a dessert. The Queen heartily consumes the dish and is immediately transmogrified into a feral bear; the likes of which her husband the King had lost his leg to years beforehand. Shortly thereafter, the three little boys sneak into the room and eat the remainder of the dessert. They are also turned into cubs.

It becomes Elinor's quest and transfixed purpose to seek out the witch in order to undo the accursed spell. During the princess' mission to free her beloved mother from her physical sort of captivity, Elinor must protect the bear and guide her to safety. Watching her mother in danger changes the young lady's perspective, and living as a rather helpless bear causes the Queen to understand her daughter's needs and wants and to appreciate her free spirit.

Disney's Brave on DVD is a true morality tale with many unique storyline meanderings. Bill Connolly as Fergus (the King) works perfectly. Emma Thompson's voice has a melodious sweetness and Kelly McDonald's accent is unerringly Scottish through and through. This film is appropriate for children and adults of all ages. Audiences watching it in Blu-ray will allow for the full effect of Pixar's magical high definition images to bedazzle them. Overall, Disney's Brave on DVD is a tremendous animated film from the masters at Pixar.
