UP is a movie that showcases nostalgia on demand! Poor Christopher Plummer’s wife and childhood best friend died leaving him forlorn in an old house smackdab in the middle of city construction. Unwilling to leave, Plummer instead devised one of the most incredible exits in history. Careful about spoilers here. Plummer rigged his house to fly on account of hundreds of carefully tuned helium balloons causing the house to ascend. Little did he realize that Ed Asner’s character (a clumsy and sweet young boy scout) had been waiting on the porch the whole time. This is where the sadness and triumph ends and the real adventure begins. After a humorous rejection, Plummer lets Asner into the flying helium house. We learn more about Asner’s drive to receive one more merit badge, for helping/assisting the elderly.

       Plummer’s destination? A gorgeous waterfall away from urban life. His plan? To land his house nearby to spend his final days in remembrance of his deceased wife. However, Asner’s clumsy character throws a monkey wrench into those plans and hilarious adventure ensues. Of course I am short-changing the plot, but why spoil everything? This is a review, not a summary people!

       As a children’s film UP works well and is a real crowd pleaser. The sadness teamed with laughter provides an inspirational message. As an escape for adults it is better in 3D to add a little something extra even if the glasses are hideous and weigh 10 pounds! Watch the film particularly if you are avoiding horror movies!  One final note; the inclusion of Shia Laboeuf and Delroy Lindo as primary chracters is another stroke of genius.  Shia has one of those lovable voices that appeals to children.
