Writer/Director Chris Butler has placed his ghoulish finger on the wavering pulse of adolescent film appreciation. Paranorman is a special picture that will catalyze the imagination of millions of young children. Our society can always use a little more fiction in its life so long as it is instructive. Paranorman boasts a super cast of vocal artists including: Jeff Garlin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Leslie Mann, Anna Kendrick, Tucker Albrizzi and Casey Affleck (not to be confused with Aflac). While the dead are malingering, the living will suffer proposed Guy Richie (paraphrasing). It sure is a good thing Norman wears his ectoplasmic glasses all day long. Yes folks, young Paranorman can see the dead.
These past few years have been something of a golden age for Disney. With a vast reservoir of classics to draw on, the studio (Pixar is their animation division) has remastered and ameliorated their library of animated films. Perhaps the one drawback has been the curse of the Disney classics. By this I mean to purport that the greatest of all fairy tales and tall tales have already been told. There is little room left for originality in theme. This is what makes Disney's Brave DVD all the more magnificent. Disney's Brave on Blu-ray and DVD is an astounding work of art. Its originality is unquestionable. The sights and sounds (full of will-o'-the-wisps) are refreshing.
I had not watched Southpark in years. Sometimes a program will demonstrate a hint of racism or anti-Semitism or simply lose its appeal. This also happened with Family Guy. Their hatred of all things republican and 50% of the entire country caused me to stop watching the show temporarily. In my challenging search for a show to enjoy during the fall television hiatus, I rekindled my old relationship with Southpark (entering its 17th season) and I am so glad I did, thanks to the folks at Hulu Plus.
Disney has just released The Tigger Movie on Blu ray and DVD. A. A. Milne's beloved animals are re-animated and in spectacularly enhanced definition. Though The Tigger Movie first arrived in 2000, it is never too early or too late to celebrate its brilliance. This film would make a wonderful addition to your treasury of Disney's Animated Classics, especially alongside The Winnie the Pooh movie.
Disney's Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World 3 Disc Special Edition on Blu-ray and DVD is a magical addition to the treasure chest of their special movie collection. Disney's Pocahontas DVD is in stores now and what better time than the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year to debut this semi-historical film in all of its magnificence. Though the historian inside of me clamors for more factually approximate plotlines from Disney, it is hard to complain when their motion pictures are this memorable and this superb. In the world of the legendary Pocahontas all things are possible.
