Californication Season 5 Ending

Those of you that have been avid readers here at screenspitlight.com may recall our prognostications for Californication Season 5.  Whether or not we hit the target is irrelevant because from the get-go the entire cast came out screaming. It was pure genius to distance themselves from the ending of Season Four by fast-forwarding the clock to two or more years later. Karen (Natasha McElhone)is married to an alcoholic writer as a sort of Hank proxy, Becca (Madeline Martin) is involved with the smarmiest social-climber looking to use Hank's family for everything they have, Charlie (Evan Handler) is sleeping with the slutty babysitter, Marcy (Pamela Adlon) is still with Mr. horse penis, and the entire world is upside down. What really matters is what happens with Hank.

When the season began he had been dating a stunningly beautiful woman but he cared for her about as much as I like Kim Kardashian, that is to say less than zero (sorry Brad Easton Ellis I ripped you off). Unfortunately for her, Hank is incapable of requiting any woman's love save for his eternal one-and-only, Karen, a.k.a. the baby momma. This drives her absolutely mad until at the series finale she poisons both herself and Hank on the verge of his final crowning achievement, being with Karen and Becca forever.

Yes folks, this is not a recap of Season 5, it is an expression of my torn heart. So what if I admit this series tore me to pieces. Every episode has its cringes and embarrassments and laughs and frills, but more than that it has heart. People are flawed, some more than others, get over it. The character Hank Moody deserved a better ending and so did the devoted fans. Assisted suicide/murder at the breaking point of all insanity as it is? The series writers took this ending too far into oblivion and now after five long and rumpus years we are left with the death of a fictional icon and some very broken hearts. If there will be no Californication Season 6 then shame on you. If there will be then shame on you, short of a pox on thy house! Seriously though, let's toast to the elimination of one of the great television series of all time, one of my forever favorites, Californication. It was wonderful while it lasted.
