The aptly named Charlie is a father, ex-husband, lover boy, and therapist all in one. His neighbor is sexually-driven, his therapy cohorts are (personal descriptions) gay, weak, a ragtag band ofmurderous prisoners in orange jumpsuits and a random twisted-bitchy woman sentenced to court-ordered therapy. The two most interesting characters are those played by Charlie and Selma and that's perfectly fine because they are the stars of the show. There is perhaps too much long-winded dialogue but that is refreshing after Sheen's lines of late had mostly been one-liners catering to his inebriated state of mind. There is enough smart writing to sustain laughter but I truly wonder where the storyline is going. I want to become immersed in the premise of the program and for this show to last for years.
FX deserves to be applauded for putting forward one of the greatest and most interesting Thursday night comedy lineups since the days of Seinfeld and Cheers and Friends over on NBC. Let's face it, most comedy shows worth their weight in salt have been long forgotten or placed forever on reruns. Anger Management followed by Wilfred with Ricky Gervais and Brand X with my favorite British pervert Russell Brand, is a great beginning of a comedy night that will entertain millions should they be A. smart enough to know when the shows air, and B. subscribers of cable. Charlie Sheen and Selma Blair have a sort of disgustingly gross sexuality but somehow it works and is uniquely fascinating. He makes Blair look like a jungle hellcat despite her obvious lack of bimbo appeal. Frankly, Ashton Kutcher (and I write this not for ratings but to express what most viewers truly think) is an under-talented colossal douche bag. Writing this may discourage my colleagues in the FFCC from paying much attention to my future articles but as Robert Downey Jr. exclaimed loudly in Tropical Thunder "just because you don't believe it don't make it not true!" Two thumbs up (god knows where) for Charlie Sheen and way to get back on that wagon...or is it off the wagon? Let's switch to a horse. Nice riding!
