The plot is simple and modern; solar flares threaten the climate, the economy and the safety of human beings. Nicolas Cage is an astro-physicist capable of diagnosing minor solar disturbances. His son has visions, something grander than night terrors. Throughout the film we are treated to mystery unlike any seen before. Following the twists and the turns of the plotline made my hair stand erect and shivers come down my spine. Revealing more about the storyline would undoubtedly destroy your enjoyment of the film and would effectively ruin the surprises.

There is a major downside to this film, and this is a spoiler so proceed with caution! The writers have combined extra-terrestrials with biblical scholarship in an offensive way. I am secularist and unphased by this theologically, but as a moviegoer I can understand the angst and disappointment of casual fans. Pretending that aliens are the keepers of the garden of Eden, and the reinvention of the human race is something that I find far-fetched and frankly speculative at its very best, a grandiose display of colossal ignorance at its worst. Please enjoy this movie until the silliness overwhelms, for the majority of the picture is beyond spectacular.
